Sep 21, 2022 (newstodate): Ercan International Airport in the de facto Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus may soon see the arrival of the first direct international flights.
In retaliation to the US lifting its arms embargo on the Republic of Cyprus, in southern Cyprus, Russia and Turkey have negotiated an agreement for the opening of direct flights between Russia and Northern Cyprus that is recognized only by Turkey, while considered by the international community to be part of the Republic of Cyprus.
It is understood that the Russian government has OK'ed the plan, and the inaugural flight is now expected already by November 15, 2022, with the attendance of the Turkish president, underlining the perception of the coming new routes to constitute a major diplomatic victory for Turkey.
Today Ercan Int'l Airport is handling traffic only by Turkish carriers as all international connections remain forced to connect via a Turkish airport, notably the airports serving Istanbul.
