Sep 06, 2022 (newstodate): In contravention of the western sanctions, Russia is investing great efforts in re-registering its commercial airline fleet to gain control and abrogate lease contracts with western aircraft lessors.
According to Russia's Ministry of Transport, 1,218 of the country's total of 1,288 commercial aircraft are now on Russian register.
This raises alarm over the airworthiness and flight safety of the fleet, while Russia claims that it is fully capable of maintaining the fleet by domestic providers, living up to the requirements of the Chicago Convention.
In 2018, out of 743 western-built aircraft operated by Russian airlines only 133 were flying under Russian registration, while 582 were registered in Bermuda, and 26 in Ireland.
This corresponded to 78 percent of all western-built aircraft operating in Russia for 29 airlines operating on western registers.
