Aug 22, 2022 (newstodate): The future development of Uzbekistan Airways lies in privatization of the currently state-owned airline.
The State Asset Management Agency has opened a competition for selection of a professional consulting company to develop a strategy for privatization of Uzbekistan Airways JSC in accordance with the relevant privatization programs, with September 17, 2022, as the deadline for proposals.
The aims of the privatization are development of competition in the network and reduction of state participation;ꞏ increasing the efficiency of use of natural, financial, technical and labor resources; and increasing the volume of attracting private investments for development of the sector.
The state aims at selling 51 percent or more of the stake in the airline to the selected investor through a tender process.
Today, Uzbekistan Airways operates scheduled flights to more than 50 destinations in Europe, Asia and North America, with representative offices in more than 20 cities.
In the Baltic region, Uzbekistan Airways used Riga Airport as a transit hub on its flights between Tashkent and New York from October 31, 2004, and since October 23, 2004, airBaltic and Uzbekistan Airways cooperated under a code-share agreement covering the flights between Tashkent and Riga.
From May 2015, the agreement was expanded to comprise also the flights by the Uzbek carrier between Riga and New York - but the cooperation stopped in March 2018 as Uzbekistan Airways introduced its Boeing 787 aircraft without needs for the intermediate stop at Riga Airport.
Today, the two carriers are cooperating under a code-share agreement from November 22, 2021, allowing passengers from the two airlines to benefit from one-ticket access to flights between Riga and Tashkent as well as onward flights on the routes served by the two carriers.
