Aug 31, 2022 (newstodate): Kittila Airport in Finland's Lapland, above the Arctic Circle, is attracting more and more traffic from Central Europe.
New at the airport will be Eurowings from Dusseldorf starting from Christmas Eve with a weekly rotation till March 25, 2023.
Air France will be operating flights from Paris during the period December 10, 2022-March 12, 2023, and both Lufthansa and airBaltic will be operating flights to Kittila from December 7, 2022, with Lufthansa connecting from Munich till March 25, 2023, and airBaltic flying in from Riga till March 11, 2023.
TUI Netherlands also plans to introduce scheduled charter flights from Rotterdam to Kittila and Kuusamo in northern Finland.
The service will be operated as a triangular route from January 14 to March 23, 2023, using a Boeing 737-800 with a weekly rotation.
Finally, Kittila is a traditional "Visit Santa"-destination, attracting huge loads of short-time visitors from European markets including the UK.
Over-all, the Finnish Santa Claus air traffic is big business, in 2018 generating 677 Christmas charters, which was 89 more flights than the preceding year- and in 2016 503 charter flights from European destinations and 401 domestic flights in Finland headed towards Rovaniemi and Kittila.
