Aug 23, 2022 (newstodate): The Icelandic start-up virtual carrier Niceair has had its teething troubles in the UK - but is confident of sustained growth and development.
-Things have been going better than expected this summer. The Load factor on our trunk route between Akureyri and Copenhagen starting from June 2, 2022, has been very good and has a positive outlook into the winter. At the same time, sunflights for the Icelanders have also been busy, following the coldest summer in thirty years up here, says Thorvaldur Ludvik Sigurjonsson, Niceair CEO.
-We have been working towards a permanent solution with the UK authorities and hope to be able to return to the UK in the winter, as well as introducing more destinations for our 2023 program, says MNr Sigurjonsson.
So far, Niceair has failed in getting its planned routes to the UK up in the air; flights from Akureyri to London Stansted and Manchester, planned for launch from June 3, 2022, were stalled after only one flight due to Brexit legal effects on air services by EU member state airlines.
The launch of the flights at Akureyri Airport aims at opening up for a new stream of tourism in Iceland, where the focus has so far centered on the area in the south due to the location of the country's largest airport, Keflavik, and Iceland's capital Reykjavik.
Niceair's flight operations are provided by the Portuguese ACMI and charter carrier HiFly allocating one of its two Airbus A319 aircraft to serve on Niceair's route network.
At Copenhagen Airport, Niceair is handled by Aviator Airport Alliance.
