Aug 16, 2022 (newstodate): Basically a single-type airline since May 2020 and now with 36 Airbus A220-300 aircraft in the fleet, Latvia's airBaltic is actually operating a most diverse fleet in summer 2022.
With 11 aircraft on wet-lease contracts with other airlines including Eurowings and SAS and up to six Airbus A220-300 aircraft stuck on the ground due to supply chain distortions, airBaltic has turned to lease of other aircraft to cater to its needs.
This summer, airBaltic has thus been operating one Airbus A319 and one Fokker 100 from the Romanian airline Carpatair, as well as one Boeing 737-800 from the Ukrainian carrier SkyUp, one Boeing 737-900 from Ukraine International Airlines, one Boeing 737-800 from the Czech carrier SmartWings, and one Embraer E190 from a yet-unnamed airline.
Sources outside airBaltic claim that the tactics may be to lease out own capacity at high rates to external customers, and lease-in external capacity at lower rates to benefit from the profit margin.
