Aug 01, 2022 (newstodate): While the country's economy remains in dire straits and on the verge of collapse after the Taliban take-over, Afghanistan's leading airline seems to be shopping big-time for new aircraft.
In July 2022, Ariana Afghan Airlines opened a tender for the acquisition of two Airbus A330-200 passenger aircraft and one Airbus A330-200 freighter.
Now, a fresh tender has been issued for six Boeing 737-800 aircraft as well to join the airline that has been on the list of air carriers banned in the European Union since October 2006.
While it remains uncertain how Afghanistan can finance the acquisitions, sources claim that the investment may come from China as part of the growing cooperation between the two countries.
Ariana Afghan Airlines reopened commercial flights in November 2021, and is currently operating flights to Saudi Arabia, Pakistan, the UAE, Qatar, Turkey, Iran, and Russia, with plans for restarting flights to India, China, and Kuwait.
