Jul 28, 2022 (newstodate): Icelandair is again adding capacity to its Boeing 737 MAX fleet.
After announcing on June 16, 2022, the inking of a LoI comprising lease of four more Boeing 737 MAX aircraft ready to go - built in 2018 - and slated for delivery in autumn 2022, the company has now entered yet another agreement with BOC for the lease of a further two Boeing 737 MAX aircraft for delivery by Autumn 2023.
With this latest announcement, Icelandair will be operating a fleet of 20 Boeing 737 MAX 8 and 9 aircraft.
Originally, Icelandair placed orders for a total of 16 Boeing 737 MAX aircraft, but reached an agreement with Boeing in August 2020 to cut back the order to only 12 aircraft as part of the settlement to alleviate the problems by the grounding of the aircraft type after two serious and fatal accidents.
The carrier however regained its confidence in the aircraft, inking a long-term operating lease contract in January this year with Dubai Aerospace Enterprise for two ex-factory Boeing 737 MAX 8 aircraft, earlier destined for Air Maroc, and delivered to Icelandair in spring 2022 in time for the summer schedule, and bringing the fleet of Boeing 737 MAX aircraft to 14.
Icelandair started operating its first three Boeing 737 MAX 8 aircraft in 2018 - and the aircraft returned on Icelandair's schedule again from March 2021 after a long period of parking.
