Jun 15, 2022 (newstodate): The largest airport in the Baltic region, Latvia's Riga Airport is seeing cargo volumes drastically down in 2022.
During January-May 2022, a total of 9,495 tonnes of cargo and mail was handled at the airport - a drop by 6.8 percent, y-o-y.
But looking into the latest figures from May 2022, the decline is a hefty 33.4 percent, y-o-y, reflecting the devastating effect on the industry caused by the Russian war on Ukraine since February 24, 2022, in the aftermath of the previous Covid-19 period.
In May 2022, cargo volumes were 701 tonnes, down 57 percent, while mail volumes at 846 tonnes still provided some consolation with a growth by 19 percent, y-o-y.
Overall, the Latvian carrier airBaltic generated 38.9 percent of the total volumes in May 2022, thanks to mail shipments, while EAT operating for DHL was the second-largest operator with 27.4 percent of the total volumes handled, all in the cargo segment.
