Jun 15, 2022 (newstodate): This summer is finally seeing the start of construction of the new fixed-wing airport at Qaqortoq, in the south of Greenland, delayed by almost a year.
The Canadian company Pennecon Heavy Civil finally emerged as the winner of the tender for construction of the runway, and the contract includes, among other things, construction of a 1,500 m runway, site preparations for the terminal construction, taxiway, airfield, public parking areas, and completion of the access road to Qaqortoq.
Pennecon Heavy Civil has contracted the Danish logistics company Blue Water for chartering of bulk vessels from Canada to Greenland, as well as coordination of various shipments of material from Canada and Europe to Greenland to be used for the construction of the new airport.
The construction schedule runs over three years, and the new airport will be ready for use in the autumn of 2025.
In the original master plan, the new airport at Qaqortoq was however slated for completion by Q4, 2023, already.
