Jun 16, 2022 (newstodate): Maersk Air Cargo is advancing on the path to setting up the carrier with an operational base at Denmark's Billund Airport.
Plans are to establish a line station for maintenance of the coming fleet initially comprising three Boeing 767-300 currently under cargo conversion and slated for delivery from year-end, with the last to arrive early in 2023.
-We are in close dialogue with Billund Airport; all details are not yet in place, but the base is now under formation, says Peter Corfitsen, Maersk Air Cargo CEO.
-It also remains to be determined to which extent Billund Airport will provide cargo handling services for the coming operations.
-The exact number of pilot crew is currently not definitively settled; we are planning for long-haul operations for cargo flights between Europe and China, requiring also positioning of flight crews at various destination. But overall, we expect to employ between 60 and 70 flight crew members, says Mr Corfitsen.
The new cargo airline builds on the existing in-house cargo airline Star Air with a current fleet of 15 Boeing 767 cargo aircraft, including 12 Boeing 767-200 and three Boeing 767-300 converted freighters operating on contracts with integrators as well as providing charter services.
