Jun 08, 2022 (newstodate): Despite the Russian airspace closure, most cargo figures clearly improved year-on-year but remained closer to April 2022 figures in May, says Finnair in a comment on May statistics.
The airline lifted a total of 10,221 tonnes of cargo during May 2022, 51.1 percent up, y-o-y.
Totals included 4,727 tonnes carried on the Asian lanes which was still up 109 percent, y-o-y, but a far cry from loads in pre-Covid May 2019 that saw a growth by 10.7 percent to 10,844 tonnes.
The N American lanes generated 3,253 tonnes of cargo, up 2,072 percent y-o-y, and also steeply more than May 2019 when 1,471 tonnes were carried after growing 55.5 percent, y-o-y.
The figures demonstrate the decline on the Asian traffic due to both Covid-19 and, not least, the closure of Russian overflight options, leading to an intensifying focus on the transatlantic lanes instead.
Cargo on Finnair's European traffic was 2,194 tonnes in May 2022, up 1,194 percent, y-o-y, but showing no development compared to May 2019 when 2,981 tonnes were carried after increasing 56.2 percent on the preceding year.
During January-May 2022 Finnair lifted a total of 54,943 tonnes of cargo, up 61.1 percent, y-o-y.
This is still 18.2 percent below the same period in 2019 when a total of 67,167 tonnes was lifted on Finnair aircraft.
