Jun 22, 2022 (newstodate): Air services will not be capable of maintaining Russia's trade with its Baltic Sea enclave, Kaliningrad.
From June 17, 2022, Lithuania has enforced the EU sanctions on transportation of goods to and from Russia to comprise the rail traffic with transit goods through the corridor connecting Russia and Kaliningrad through Lithuanian territory.
-Air traffic suffered first of all, since Russian airlines were banned from flying in the airspace of EU countries back in the first quarter. This led to an increase in the duration of flights to Kaliningrad. However, air traffic remains, says a Russian analyst Oleg Panteleev, executive director of the AviaPort information and analytical agency, in a commentary to Krasnaya Vesna news agency.
One problem is that the closure of EU airspace to Russian air traffic extends flying time by up to several hours via St Petersburg and next over the neutral waters of the Baltic Sea along the coasts of Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania, incurring high costs of transportation and barring most commodities through this venue.
According to Mr Panteleev, only caviar is suited for air transport between Russia and Kaliningrad that otherwise depends on transit shipments by rail of technological equipment, iron and steel products, non-ferrous metals, chemicals, timber, fertilizers, cement, glass containers, alcohol - and yes, caviar.
Estimates are that some 40-50 percent of all transit shipments to Kaliningrad are comprised by the ban.
