Jun 29, 2022 (newstodate): Azerbaijan's cargo carrier Silk Way West Airlines has been a strong customer with Boeing - but is now pinning its future on Airbus, instead.
The carrier is currently operating a fleet of seven Boeing 747-400 and five Boeing 747-8 freighter aircraft, and was poised to order up to 20 more Boeing 747-8 aircraft from Boeing.
But the end of the Boeing 747 production line to be replaced by Boeing 777X cargo aircraft with deliveries to start only in 2027 has caused Silk Way West to rethink its fleet strategy.
The carrier has thus now inked an order with Airbus for initially two Airbus 350F aircraft with delivery planned over 2027-2028, and with option for a further two units.
The order is the first between Silk Way West and Airbus, and also the first order for A350F in the Central Asia and CIS region
