May 11, 2022 (newstodate): Now it seems that United Airlines will have only one Scandinavian destination on its network in summer 2022: Bergen, in Norway.
From May 5, 2022, United Airlines commenced seasonal flights between New York Newark Airport and Bergen Flesland Airport with three weekly rotations using Boeing 757-200 aircraft.
But - United Airlines then decided to return to Stockholm as well in summer 2022, with the first flight on May 14, 2022, offering daily rotations from New York Newark Airport with Boeing 757-200 aircraft.
However, the carrier has now once again scrapped plans for a return to Stockholm, last served in summer 2019, probably due to the increasing competition on the route from SAS and Finnair.
But besides considering the competitive situation, United Airlines is also suffering from a shortage of aircraft capacity; the carrier is still awaiting final clearance to bring back its 52 Boeing 777-200 and Boeing 777-200ER aircraft grounded since February 2021, when a United flight from Denver to Honolulu lost engine parts in mid-air over Denver.
