May 27, 2022 (newstodate): The Spanish-owned Swedish cargo carrier West Atlantic has ambitions for entering the market for cargo flights between the EU and the USA.
On May 10, 2022, the company has applied with the US regulator DOT for a Foreign Air Carrier Permit and for Exemption Authority allowing it to transport cargo and mail between any point in the EU and the United States, and between any point in third countries and the United States, pursuant to the Air Transport Agreement between the United States and the European Union and its Member States.
Pending the approval by DOT of its application, West Atlantic requests that it be granted an exemption to allow it to provide the services described for a two-year period or until the requested permit authority becomes effective, whichever occurs first.
Since April 2019, the Swedish cargo charter and ACMI carrier West Atlantic is part of the Spanish holding company LUSAT.
West Atlantic is today without wide-body capacity; at its peak, the carrier was operating four Boeing 767-200F aircraft.
Two of the Boeing 767-200F aircraft were however redelivered to the lessor already in September 2019 and March 2020, respectively - and the remaining two left the fleet on January 1, 2021, closing a chapter in the carrier's history.
