May 30, 2022 (newstodate): Otherwise barred from most markets, Israel is preparing for welcoming Belavia, the Belarus national carrier.
Starting from June 2022, the carrier will restart operations on the route between Minsk and Tel Aviv - but at a penalty on flying hours and costs.
As a consequence of European sanctions and the Russian invasion of Ukraine, Belavia is forced to route its flights via Kazakhstan, resulting in nine hours' flying time, compared to only four hours on the earlier routing.
Further burdening the operation is the fact that Belavia does not operate aircraft capable of covering this distance, necessitating an en-route fueling stop at Baku, in Azerbaijan, also adding to the cost.
Belavia has been disconnected from IATA's global airline system BSP concerning ticket sales, and from CASS, IATAs global system for air cargo settlements.
Belavia has also been forced to ground about half of its aircraft fleet due to the implementation of the latest round of sanctions from December 2, 2021.
