May 31, 2022 (newstodate): The new North Icelandic virtual carrier Niceair has now taken delivery at Akureyri Airport of its aircraft in own livery.
The aircraft comes right in time for the inaugural flight from Akureyri to Copenhagen Airport on June 2, 2022 - the carrier's first route.
The flight program will open with two weekly rotations between Akureyri and Copenhagen, followed by the launch of flights to London Stansted on June 3, 2022, also with two weekly rotations, rounding off with the first flight to Tenerife South from June 8, 2022, offering one weekly rotation.
Niceair's flights will be provided by its partner, the Portuguese ACMI and charter carrier HiFly allocating one of its two Airbus A319 aircraft to serve on Niceair's route network.
Behind the project is Thorvaldur Sigurjonsson, CEO of Circle Air, an Icelandic air tours and charter company operating from Reykjavik and Akureyri, offering sightseeing tours with smaller aircraft.
The launch of the new flights at Akureyri Airport aims at opening up for a new stream of incoming tourism in Iceland, where the focus has so far centered on the area in the south due to the location of the country's largest airport, Keflavik, and Iceland's capital Reykjavik.
Not unexpectedly, Icelandair has been mulling plans - yet unconfirmed - for setting up own flights between Keflavik and Akureyri in an effort to secure its traditional hold on the country's incoming tourism.
Incidentally, Akureyri Airport will also see a one-off flight operation to Chania, on Crete, on June 2, 2022, as the Italian carrier Neos performs a one-off flight on the route from Keflavik to Akureyri continuing to Crete, with a return flight on June 13, 2022.
