May 31, 2022 (newstodate): Starting from tomorrow, June 1, 2022, Finnair is online with its fifth route from Helsinki to the USA: Seattle.
The carrier will be offering three weekly rotations on the route using Airbus A330-300 aircraft, handled by WFS at Seattle, and with cargo sales in the US market provided by its GSSA, the ECS Group's Globe Air Cargo.
Earlier, Finnair served Seattle from May 1981 till October 1989 with DC10, operating a direct Helsinki–Seattle and/or Helsinki–Seattle–Los Angeles routing, and had planned for the reopening of the route to Seattle already from June 2021 - which was however postponed due to the Covid-19 situation.
Due to the sustained Covid-19 market disruptions, and adding today's "new normal" after Russia's invasion of Ukraine and the closure of Russian airspace, Finnair is changing its focus away from the North Asian markets to serving instead West and South Asian routes and, not least, the North Atlantic lanes.
Seattle was served by SAS from Copenhagen for 40 years, and SAS was long alone in providing direct flights between Europe and Seattle before closing down the route from the start of the winter 2009/10 schedule.
