May 10, 2022 (newstodate): On May 5, 2022, EASA has assessed the new security threats posed by the invasion of Ukraine by the Russian Federation.
The impact is estimated by EASA to be significant and very far-reaching, affecting aviation safety in a number of ways.
EASA has listed a total of 20 safety challenges and mitigation actions. In addition to aviation safety, the identified challenges relate to aviation infrastructure, air traffic management and navigation systems, human performance, re-routing, economic challenges, and the health impact of a new operating environment.
EASA warns that Russia's hostilities in Ukraine pose increased risks to civil aviation outside the war zones. At worst, flying traffic in the vicinity of a war zone could be targeted by air defenses or fighters patrolling the skies.
As a result of the closure of Russian airspace, extended flight routes may also cause significant fatigue for crews, compromising flight safety. When operating on polar routes, the amount of cosmic radiation on the crews also increases significantly.
The area of the Gulf of Finland, where significant unidentified aircraft operate, has also been classified as a high-risk area.
