May 30, 2022 (newstodate): While walking a thin line concerning the issue of Russian invasion of Ukraine, China has issued a ban on use of its airspace for Russian aircraft still on foreign-owned registry.
China thus seeks to secure its airspace from overflights and operations by Russian aircraft that do not adhere to the aviation industry's airworthiness requirements.
By claiming that it intends to start manufacturing spares and authorizing maintenance within its own jurisdiction, Russia runs the risk of losing its aircraft fleet's airworthiness in countries that observe ICAO/EASA/FAA regulations.
The Chinese move will effectively put further restraints on the Russian aviation industry and its airlines' scope of operations, already severely hurt by western sanctions.
