May 11, 2022 (newstodate): Finland's Helsinki Airport saw its cargo volumes down by 18.4 percent, y-o-y, in April 2022.
A total of 11,717 tonnes of cargo and mail was handled at the airport compared to 14,365 tonnes in April '21, reflecting the steep decline in volumes by Finnair after the suspension of long-haul Asian-bound flights over Russian territory, in addition to the recurrent Covid-19 outbreaks in China closing down airports and traffic lanes.
In April 2022 alone, the international cargo volumes were thus down by 17.3 percent, y-o-y, while mail volumes dipped 58.6 percent.
In the first four months of this year, the airport is still seeing its total cargo volumes up by 10 percent, y-o-y; but volumes have been steadily declining since the outbreak of the Russian war on Ukraine in February this year, fully eliminating the positive signs of post-Covid recovery from the start of the year.
