Apr 04, 2022 (newstodate): With the opening flight from Budapest on August 27, 2017, Wizz Air became the first foreign low-cost carrier at Russia's St Petersburg Pulkovo Airport.
Now, Wizz Air's plans for expansion in Russia have been called off due to the invasion of Ukraine, and the carrier has announced a full retreat from Russia so far until the end of this year's summer schedule in October 2022.
Wizz Air's first route to Russia was launched on September 23, 2013, providing flights between Budapest and Moscow Vnukovo, and from December 18, 2017, the carrier also launched flights from Debrecen, in Hungary, to Moscow Vnukovo Airport with two weekly rotations.
From December 2020, Wizz Air based a second Airbus A320 aircraft to add five new Italian destinations to the route network of Pulkovo Airport: Bergamo, Venice, Bologna, Turin, and Catania, starting from December 2020/January 2021.
Wizz Air started out with flights to Budapest and London and also announced the opening of flights on new routes from St Petersburg to Bratislava, Bucharest, Copenhagen, Malta, Oslo, Salzburg Sofia, Stockholm Skavsta, and Vilnius - pending the post-Covid reopening of the markets.
Launching its base at St Petersburg in June 2020 with one Airbus A320 aircraft, the carrier placed itself in a position to fully exploit the 7th Freedom Rights allowing it to carry passengers or cargo between two foreign countries without any continuing service to its own country, as well as the visa-free access to the region, enforced from the start of 2020.
Now, all this has been stalled...
