Apr 13, 2022 (newstodate): Formerly a busy airport for Asia-Europe cargo operations, Russia's Krasnoyarsk Yemelyanovo Airport is feeling the negative effects from the country's war on Ukraine.
Handling 281 freighter en-route and fueling operations in March 2021, the number of operations dropped to a mere 65 in March 2022, and the expectations are that the traffic will go further down in April as well.
Also, only 1,210 tonnes of cargo were handled at the airport in March 2022, down 17.7 percent, y-o-y.
While passenger traffic came to a virtual stop in 2020 as the Coronavirus hit, traffic volumes were soaring from western and CIS airlines engaging in all-cargo operations with passenger aircraft, requiring a technical and fueling stop on flights between Europe and China.
In 2020, Krasnoyarsk Airport consequently saw the volume of all-cargo aircraft movements growing by 208 percent during Q1/2020.
In March 2020 alone, the airport set a new record with 300 all-cargo and freighter flight movements, up 279 percent, y-o-y.
