Apr 12, 2022 (newstodate): The EU Commission has published an updated list of airlines banned from EU airspace due to safety concerns.
Following the update, 21 airlines certified in Russia are now included on the EU Air Safety List, reflecting serious safety concerns due to Russia's forced re-registration of foreign-owned aircraft, knowingly allowing their operation without valid certificates of airworthiness, which is in breach of international aviation safety standards.
The Russian airlines include Aeroflot as well as Aurora, Aviastar, Izhavia, Yakutia, Rusjet, UVT Aero, S7 Sibir Airlines, Smartavia, IRaero, Alrosa, Nordstar, Rusline, Yamal, Nordwind, Ikar, Pobeda, Rossiya, Skol, and UTAir.
-However, I want to make it crystal-clear that this decision is not another sanction against Russia; it has been taken solely on the basis of technical and safety grounds. We do not mix safety with politics, says Adina Valean, Commissioner for Transport, in a comment on the list.
Otherwise heavily dominated by African carriers, the latest EU Air Safety List comprises also all aircraft from airlines in Afghanistan, Armenia and Kyrgyzstan, while restrictions apply on certain aircraft types from operators in Iran and North Korea.
