Apr 12, 2022 (newstodate): Eurocontrol has assembled statistics to prove the impact on selected international flight distances due to the closure of airspace over Russia.
Among the examples provided, connections from Helsinki Airport are most affected, with additional distances between 1,400 km in the case of flights to Singapore, and almost 4,000 km in the case of flights from Helsinki on the route to Seoul.
In effect, 1,400 km adds 1.25 hours to the flight between Helsinki and Sinpapore, and 4,000 km adds seven hours on a round trip between Helsinki and Seoul.
Flight times on the route Helsinki-Seoul used to be about 8.5 hours but are now 12 hours, so adding another seven hours on a round trip nearly corresponds to as much as the original one-way segment.
Further south, and further from the closed airspace, Copenhagen Airport sees an additional distance around 1,500 km on the routes to Singapore and Shanghai.
Beijing is served by a Chinese cargo operator, Air China Cargo, which is still able to fly Siberian routes, entailing no additional flying distance, while SAS has cancelled passenger flights on its route to Beijing.
