Apr 28, 2022 (newstodate): The Belarus carrier Belavia is returning services on the route connecting Minsk and Kaliningrad, the Russian enclave bordering Lithuania by the Baltic Sea.
The route has been suspended for a year - and due to the EU sanctions, Belavia is seeing the flight distance extended to 1,600 km against only 500 km as the carrier is now forced to fly first to the northeast, turn over St Petersburg and then fly over the neutral waters of the Baltic Sea along the coasts of Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania.
The flying time is thus extended to two hours 10 minutes, compared to only 45 minutes earlier.
This incurs extra high costs - that are, however, covered by the airline's owner, the Belarus state.
