Apr 25, 2022 (newstodate): The second Airbus A220-300 aircraft to be delivered to the Latvian carrier airBaltic in 2022 has now joined the fleet.
Landing at Riga Airport on April 24, 2022, the aircraft brings the fleet to 34 Airbus A220-300 aircraft, and airBaltic plans to add another six aircraft before the end of this year.
The aircraft deliveries are part of the 50 Airbus A220-300 which airBaltic has ordered; in addition, airBaltic holds 30 options and purchase rights for the same aircraft type.
With Riga Airport losing its position as a preferred transit hub for air traffic between Russia, Belarus and Ukraine and Europe during the current period of political and military turmoil, airBaltic is fighting to keep traffic flowing on European routes from the three Baltic markets, adding a spree of seasonal flights to tourist destinations and placing so far almost one-third of the fleet in the wet-lease and charter markets as well as building up traffic from airports outside the Baltic region, with the opening of Tampere, in Finland, as its first hub with allocated aircraft capacity as the first example.
