Mar 07, 2022 (newstodate): The suspension of international flights by Aeroflot and other Russian airlines poses a further problem for western aircraft lessors.
An estimated 515 out of a total of 777 leased aircraft operated by Russian airlines would be requested to be taken into custody by the leasing companies once they appear in airports outside Russia - while staying at least temporarily "safe" when kept inside the country.
According to the current EU sanctions package, lessors will have until March 28, 2022, to repossess their aircraft - but as EU, US, and Canadian sanctions have effectively prevented Russian-controlled aircraft from flying in European and North American airspace, the situation is critical for aircraft lessors.
Going up against this, Russia has even mulled the idea of nationalizing the aircraft..
