Mar 24, 2022 (newstodate): Currently serving as Greenland's only Transatlantic airport, Kangerlussuaq/Sdr Stromfjord Airport will have a future even after the completion in 2024 of two new Transatlantic airports at Nuuk and Ilulissat.
In September 2019, an agreement was inked between the governments of Denmark and Greenland to the effect that Kangerlussuaq Airport will remain in service, with the Danish Ministry of Defense to fund the operation.
To secure the future of Kangerlussuaq Airport in the longer term will however require massive maintenance and reconstruction works on the airport's 2,500m runway that is impacted by changes in the permafrost conditions causing cracks in the runway surface.
Now, a decision has been made to undertake a temporary refurbishment of the runway in summer 2022 in the form of a new coating to meet air safety requirements.
It remains clear that after the reconstruction, the airport will remain in dual military/civilian use including serving as an alternate airport to the new Transatlantic airports in Greenland.
Exactly how the future will look for Kangerlussuaq Airport will be revealed as a working group, now in session, will deliver its recommendations later this year.
