Mar 08, 2022 (newstodate): The Russian invasion of Ukraine is causing huge distortions in the airfreight market.
Overnight, the sanctions imposed by EU and other parties have brought all traffic between Europe and Asia by Russian airlines to a halt, translating into the loss of some 1,000 tonnes of daily capacity for European and other air cargo customers.
Also, the closure of Russian and Ukrainian airspace means rerouting traffic either south or north of the areas concerned which prolongs flying times by an average of two hours per leg on Europe-Asia flights, contributing to the shortfall of some 40-50 percent of cargo capacity as higher fuel loads means less cargo capacity.
Together with steeply rising fuel prices, airfreight customers are looking into a scenario with skyrocketing air cargo rates.
