Mar 09, 2022 (newstodate): Russian airlines are keen to see their aircraft safely parked on Russian soil for fear of having them impounded at EU or US airports.
EU and US sanctions have banned all aircraft on Russian registration from their airspace, while western lessors are keen to secure their assets whenever possible.
At least one Russian carrier seems to have found a way out from the mess created by the Russian invasion of Ukraine: the cargo carrier Sky Gates Airlines has reportedly changed its two Boeing 747-400F aircraft from Russian to Azerbaijani registration, next leasing them to Silk Way Airlines that now operates them on its AOC.
The Moscow Sheremetyevo Airport-based Sky Gates Airlines received its AOC in September 2016 and launched services in October 2016 with its first Boeing 747-400F aircraft, adding the second aircraft in June 2017.
