Mar 09, 2022 (newstodate): The turbulence in the airfreight market is felt also by Norway's seafood exporters sending shipments out of Oslo Airport.
One key provider of seafood terminal handling at Oslo Airport is OSCC, normally handling some 40 off/on-line airlines at Oslo Airport, including direct cargo handling contracts with about 20 airlines including AirBridgeCargo Airlines, CAL Cargo Airlines, Silk Way West Airlines, Suparna Airlines, Turkish Airlines and British Airlines.
-So far, we have fortunately not yet faced a major crisis, though we did see several cancellations immediately after the outbreak of war in Ukraine, says Roy Egil Skredderberget, OSCC CEO.
-This led to a drop in volumes by some 300 tonnes in the first week, while part of this has later returned.
-Both AirBridgeCargo and Silk Way West Airlines cancelled their once-weekly freighter operations at Oslo, which in itself was a shortfall of some 100 tonnes of capacity. But while ABC remains cancelled, Sky Way West has returned services again this week as their aircraft are not on Russian registers, leaving them free to operate.
-On the positive side, both British Airways and Turkish Airlines have even increased capacity, partly alleviating the problems.
-The seafood shippers are warned beforehand of changes in the situation, so we fortunately see no stocking up of shipments unable to move at OSCC. And we are of course doing everything to find alternate ways and venues in this challenging situation.
-Also we have so far not been forced to downsize our core workforce as we normally operate with a fixed staff adding leased-in extra manpower when needed - which is not required in the current circumstances.
-Anyhow, the situation is indeed fluid; news are coming in every day, but we strive to manage as well as possible in serving our customers, says Mr Skredderberget.
