Mar 30, 2022 (newstodate): Lithuania is keen to develop its aviation business and air connectivity.
The country's Minister of Transport and Communications has now presented a vision of the country's aviation until 2030 in the Lithuanian Aviation Guidelines until 2030, now calling for proposals and inputs from stakeholders.
Among the targets in the guidelines is the goal of seeing at least 150 routes from the airports Vilnius, Kaunas and Palanga, compared to 94 routes served in 2021, 72 in 2020 and 92 in 2019.
In 2021, the three airports handled a total of 2.5 mio passengers, compared to 6.5 mio passenger in pre-Covid 2019.
The guidelines also include a goal of seeing growth in return of the aviation sector to the state; the sector currently generates some three percent of the country's GDP, but for the aviation sector to generate five percent by 2030, it is planned to further expand the infrastructure of Vilnius and Kaunas airports: 2024 will see the completion of the construction of the departure terminal in Vilnius, and by 2025 the existing passenger terminal infrastructure at Kaunas Airport will be expanded.
Aircraft repair and maintenance companies will also be developed, and the capacity of air cargo will be increased.
Contributing to the development of the sector will be the opening of the Rail Baltica track connecting Vilnius and Kaunas airports and also connecting Lithuania and Poland after 2024.
