Mar 28, 2022 (newstodate): Icelandair may have to reconsider its latest decision on the future of its Boeing 757 aircraft fleet.
The reason would be the sustained hike in jet fuel prices that are now exceeding 1,100 USD per tonne - well above Icelandair's estimate of 800 USD to secure a profit in 2022.
In February 2022, the decision was made to postpone the decision on the eventual fate of the aging Boeing 757 fleet till 2026 despite the fact that the aircraft falls short of meeting today's requirements on fuel efficiency.
In the fleet this summer will be 13 Boeing 757-200 and two Boeing 767-300 aircraft, alongside 14 Boeing 737 MAX aircraft to serve the airline's network.
Icelandair had earlier been planning to decide by the end of 2022 on the future successor to the aging Boeing 757-200 aircraft
But according to a TV interview with Bogi Nils Bogason, Icelandair CEO, in February 2022, the Boeing 737 MAX fleet is performing so well at longer-than-expected range and with even less fuel consumption as anticipated that it will match the needs for a longer period.
Icelandair would thus expect to see the Boeing 757-200 leaving the fleet within four or five years, allowing for new thoughts on a future long-haul aircraft type without forcing a decision.
