Mar 24, 2022 (newstodate): Highl impacted by the closure of Russian airspace, Finnair is intent on keeping its Asian traffic going as strongly as possible despite rerouting of flights, longer times and less optimal use of aircraft.
This summer's schedule, just announced, sees Finnair offering daily connections to Bangkok, Delhi, Singapore and Tokyo, three weekly flights to Seoul, two weekly flights to Hong Kong, one weekly frequency to Shanghai - and even a "new" route to Mumbai, India, with three weekly frequencies from March 28, 2022, and bookings opening from April 5, 2022.
Actually, the route between Helsinki and Mumbai is not exactly new, rather a return of services to its second destination in India: Finnair started operations to Delhi, India, from November 1, 2006, adding flights to Mumbai on June 26, 2007, with five weekly rotations.
Flights to Mumbai were, however, suspended again from May 2009 citing low demand in the market, and later the destination disappeared from the route map.
For the coming summer schedule, Finnair will suspend its other services to Japan due to the Russian airspace closure.
Finnair was originally scheduled to serve Tokyo Narita and Haneda airports, Osaka, Nagoya, Sapporo, and Fukuoka with altogether 40 weekly flights.
Finnair is also postponing the start of its new Busan route, earlier slated for launch from March 30, 2020, with three weekly rotations.
In total, Finnair will offer flights from its Helsinki hub to almost 70 European destinations, five North American destinations and eight Asian destinations in the Summer 2022 schedule.
