Mar 31, 2022 (newstodate): Air Serbia has been strongly criticized for continuing its services to Russia unabated by the sanctions imposed after Russia's invasion of Ukraine.
While Air Serbia is a European airline, it is not, however, an EU-member state airline, and the EU Commission has now come out to clarify the situation.
-In line with our measures, it is impossible for a Russian carrier to sell tickets from Moscow to Belgrade, or from Belgrade to Brussels. However, if Serbia does not align its policy with the EU, then Air Serbia can sell those tickets, because we have not made these measures ex-territorial, the European Commission says in a statement.
Air Serbia is thus technically free to continue flights connecting Serbia and Russia without conflicting with EU sanctions imposed on Russia - but the pressure on Serbia to bring its policy in line with common EU standards remains, not least in light of its EU membership candidacy.
Now operating an Airbus A330-200 aircraft on the route, Air Serbia is planning to increase frequency on the route from normally eight to 15 weekly rotations.
