Feb 28, 2022 (newstodate): Norway's seafood exports is one important business sector severely affected by the ramifications of Russia's invasion of Ukraine.
Handling a significant part of Norway's seafood exports is Gardermoen Perishables Center, GPC, managed by Torgil Staalberg, who is looking into a week marked by uncertainty.
-As of today, the situation is rather turbulent, and we are seeing many cancellations as airlines are increasingly suspending flights to China with airspace closing over many countries, says Mr Staalberg.
-Normally, you would see other airlines coming in to substitute for shortfall of capacity, but in this case the situation is unclear. We know that carriers like Finnair, KLM have suspended flights to China while it seems that Korean Air, Qatar and Emirate are still operating. Aeroflot suspended their on/off freighter service at Oslo Airport already before the crisis.
-We do not expect to see many export shipments into GPC now and will monitor the situation to see if we will have to lay off staff, which is still undecided.
-In brief, the situation is still emerging, and we will await further clarification before making any clear statement. But I expect volumes through GPC to drop by 25-30 percent this week, says Mr Staalberg.
