Feb 03, 2022 (newstodate): Plans are reportedly still alive for establishing a freighter service to lift Norwegian seafood at Sweden's Luleaa Kallax Airport, close to the country's border with northern Norway and the seafood farming companies.
Since the plans were first revealed in January 2021, nothing has been heard from the project group that had hoped to see the service to launch already by spring 2021.
However, the project is still alive, confirms Knut Magne Lundemo, at the core of the project, on newstodate's inquiry.
-We are indeed working hard with increasing intensity and progress. But we remain determined not to go public with further details at this point in time, says Mr Lundemo.
Lead partners behind the project are Norrland Spedition & Transportation and Swedavia, with Estonia's XFly in a consulting role concerning flight operations.
For Norway's seafood exporters, the asset of Luleaa Kallax Airport with a 3,350m runway is its location, only 8-12 hours trucking time from seafood producing sites in northern Norway.
Over the last two decades, several attempts have been made to set up a dedicated freighter service at Luleaa Kallax Airport, with operators including Cathay Pacific Cargo, Korean Air Cargo, Atlas Air and others - but so far none have succeeded, in most cases also due to the imbalance in the traffic.
