Feb 25, 2022 (newstodate): Conflicting news keep coming out of Ukraine concerning the fate of the iconic freighter aircraft, the AN-225 Mriya.
The aircraft was parked at Kiev's Gostomel Airport, also named Antonov International Airport, as the invading Russian forces gained control of the airport.
According to first reports out, the aircraft seemed to have been damaged by military actions, but Antonov Design Bureau's Chief pilot Dmitry Antonov later reported on facebook that the aircraft had not been destroyed.
Yesterday evening, Ukrainian forces regained control over the airport, where other aircraft have reportedly been damaged by enemy fire.
As the situation remains unsettled, the eventual fate of the AN-225, the world's largest freighter, remains in the balance unless it is safely transferred outside of Ukraine - provided the runway remains operational.
