Feb 09, 2022 (newstodate): Within the coming two years, the Boeing 747 passenger aircraft will reach the end of its service life with Russian airlines.
Today the only Russian airline operating Boeing 747 aircraft in passenger version is Rossiya Airlines with nine Boeing 747-400 in the fleet, all starting their Russian life with the now-defunct carrier Transaero Airlines and transferred to Rossiya Airlines as debts-ridden Transero folded wings in 2016 after earlier ranking #2 among the country's airlines in passenger volumes.
With HQ at St Petersburg and main hub at Pulkovo Airport, Rossiya Airlines has been a member airline of the state-owned Aeroflot Group since 2011.
Plans are to start phasing out the Boeing 747-400 from 2023, with the last two units leaving the fleet in 2024.
While ending its life on the passenger side, the Boeing 747 still has a bright future in Russia as freighter aircraft, with AirBridgeCargo operating four Boeing 747-400F and 13 Boeing 747-8F, and orders pending for a further two Boeing 747-8F.
Another two Boeing 747-400F aircraft are also operated by Moscow Sheremetyevo Airport-based Sky Gates Airlines that received its AOC in September 2016 and launched services in October 2016 with its first Boeing 747-400F aircraft, adding the second aircraft in June 2017.
