Feb 08, 2022 (newstodate): Currently intoxicated by excitement from this weekend's An-225 operation, Denmark's Billund Airport came off to a good start in 2022 as for cargo volumes.
The airport handled a total of 6,713 tonnes of cargo, which was an increase by 32.4 percent, y-o-y.
Totals included 4,209 tones of exports increasing 18.2 percent, while imports took the lead with an increase by 68.3 percent, y-o-y, to 1,428 tonnes.
Driving the growth in the first month of this year was also the first flight by Bluebird Nordic on January 3, 2022; the carrier is now online at Billund with five weekly flights coming in from Keflavik to Billund, continuing to Bonn/Cologne Airport in a cooperation with UPS that has long been serving the route between Billund and Cologne with an ATP aircraft operated by West Atlantic.
Bluebird Nordic is serving the route with a Boeing 737-800 converted freighter, with exports of Icelandic seafood providing a solid basis for the profitability of the route.
Billund Airport became a steady UPS destination from March 14, 2011, when the integrator UPS revised its set-up for freighter services, replacing Malmo Airport with Billund.
