Dec 01, 2022 (newstodate): Maersk Air Cargo is preparing for launch of operations at Denmark's Billund Airport - but seemingly with a slight delay..
-We expect to take delivery of two converted aircraft before the end of this year, with the third to follow in 2023. If everything goes as planned, the first Boeing 767 freighter may thus enter commercial service with Maersk Air Cargo at Billund Airport before year-end, Maersk Air Cargo CEO Peter Corfitsen, Maersk Air Cargo CEO told newstodate back in August 2022.
But - according to an update today, Billund Airport now expects to see the start of the new airline "some time" in Q1, 2023.
-Billund Airport has won the contract with Maersk Air Cargo for ground and cargo handling, which has required an upscaling of the workforce after a recruitment process, says Mads Bisp Agersnap, Billund Airport PR Manager.
However, the opening of Maersk Air Cargo's base at Billund Airport will not require an expansion of the airport's existing infrastructure, the airport says.
In the first phase, and in addition to serving Star Air's integrator customers from European hubs as hitherto, Maersk Air Cargo will allocate three converted Boeing 767 freighters to be based at Denmark's Billund Airport for cargo flights between Europe and China, adding two new ex-factory Boeing 777F aircraft in late 2024, primarily dedicated to serving customers of Maersk Group companies.
