Dec 05, 2022 (newstodate): Isavia has been working hard to attract more traffic into the country's Akureyri Airport - and it seems to be paying off.
To boost the development, Isavia has implemented a scheme of grants, subsidies and discounts to lure new operators, and Akureyri Airport has seen international operations up by 30 percent in Jan-Oct 2022.
During the first three years of operations, airlines will be granted a discount on landing and passenger charges by 100, 90, and 75 percent, respectively.
2022 thus saw the launch of the new Icelandic carrier NiceAir offering flights on routes to Copenhagen and Tenerife, to be followed in Spring 2023 by new routes to Dusseldorf and Alicante.
NiceAir is also expected to make a second try to open flights from Akyreyri to London Stansted and Manchester in 2023 after its earlier attempts ran against new Brexit/EU rules and limitations.
So far, the German airline Condor has put flights to Akureyri on the schedule in 2023, and more airlines are said to be in advanced negotiations as well.
