Dec 16, 2022 (newstodate): Efforts by several stakeholders to open new gateways to Iceland alongside the main international airport at Keflavik are gaining traction.
As the latest newcomer at Akureyri Airport in the country's north is the Swiss carrier Edelweiss, announcing plans to be offering a weekly rotation between Zurich and Akureyri from July 7 to August 18, 2023, comprising seven roundtrips with Airbus A320 aircraft.
To boost development, Isavia has implemented a scheme of grants, subsidies and discounts to lure new operators, and Akureyri Airport has seen international operations up by 30 percent in Jan-Oct 2022.
During the first three years of operations, airlines will be granted a discount on landing and passenger charges by 100, 90, and 75 percent, respectively.
As of now, Akureyri Airport is thus to see three airlines on the platform in 2023, alongside the Icelandic carrier NiceAir and the German leisure airline Condor.
Edelweiss is, however, no newcomer to Iceland, having been online at Keflavik for a decade and currently operating three weekly flights to Keflavik during the winter schedule.
