Dec 02, 2022 (newstodate): Russia remains a key, and even growing, market for the Dubai-based airline Emirates, undaunted by western sanction on the country.
The carrier performed its first passenger flight between Dubai and Russia on July 1, 2003, offering five weekly rotations with Airbus A330-200 aircraft.
By then, Emirates SkyCargo was no novice to Russia either, having operated services into Moscow in 1995 with a leased IL76 aircraft that carried 40 tonnes of cargo, at a time when the devolution of the Soviet Union had led to a huge demand for manufactured and electronic goods.
Starting from November 1, 2011, Emirates also launched daily flights between Dubai and St Petersburg with a mix of Airbus A340-300 and A330-200 aircraft.
From the start of December 2022, Emirates is going up from earlier four weekly rotations to six weekly flights, and returning to daily services starting from December 15, 2022.
A significant event was the introduction of a daily Emirates Airbus A380 service between Moscow and Dubai starting from December 1, 2012, and during these 10 years Emirates has carried more than 2.2 million passengers on over 5,000 flights with the Airbus A380 between the two airports.
Taking advantage of the western sanctions on Russia leading to scarcity of flight options for Russians, Emirates is now operating three daily Airbus A380 rotations on the route since November this year.
However, Emirates is not alone in providing flight services between Russia and the UAE; Today, five foreign carriers operate flights between the two markets: Air Arabia flies from Sharjah to Moscow, Etihad Airways is in the air between Abu Dhabi and Moscow, and flydubai serves eight Russian destinations from Dubai.
In total, together with Russian airlines, the traffic connecting Russia and destinations in the United Arab Emirates has grown to 232 weekly rotations!
