Nov 28, 2022 (newstodate): The current freeze in Russian/western relations under the sanctions produce many unforeseen results.
One is that the Russian carrier Azimuth has now taken delivery of a new Superjet 100 aircraft with “second category” engines - that is, used engines coming from a spare pool of renovated power plants.
The certified engine for the Superjet 100 aircraft is the SaM146 - an engine produced by the PowerJet joint venture between the French company Snecma and Russia's NPO Saturn.
But the production of this engine has now been stopped due to sanctions, and Russia is forced to activate its spare pool of engines that will thus shrink, endangering the sustained operations of the Superjet aircraft fleet.
Russia is now working to design a new engine for the Superjet aircraft - but this will require new certification, which is a time-consuming procedure.
