Nov 03, 2022 (newstodate): Closing a 40-years long chapter, Air Greenland performed its last landing at Nuuk Airport's old runway on November 2, 2022.
From now, all aircraft operations will be performed on the first half of the new runway to serve Nuuk Airport that has been duly certified by the Danish Civil Aviation Authority after final approval of installations and equipment.
The existing old 950 m runway has been in service for more than 40 years; and when fully completed, the new runway at Nuuk Airport slated for opening by late 2024 will offer 2,200 m for start and landings.
According to Greenlandic media, new equipment including ILS CAT III C would secure traffic by up to 100 percent if implemented; but the airport company admits that this would require further extensive and expensive preconditions that are outside the current budgets - and therefore unfeasible.
However, estimates - and hopes - are that the use of larger aircraft types, a wider runway and the implementation of new navigation and runway lighting systems will eventually outbalance the adversities to secure a higher regularity of flights than in today's situation.
