Oct 14, 2022 (newstodate): Preparations are well underway at the Faroe Islands' Vagar Airport for the launch of the coming new cargo service, FarCargo.
-We have sourced the GSE required for handling of the Boeing 757-200 freighter, while the eventual purchase contract is still pending. We plan to acquire two Hi-loaders to secure redundancy in operations, as well as other pertinent equipment, says Regin Jakobsen, Vagar Airport Managing Director.
-FarCargo has tendered the handling contract that was won by Vagar Airport, and we expect to increase handling staff as needs arise. Bakkafrost is fully certified as Known Shipper and can thus build and deliver pallets of seafood shipments from its main terminal directly to the airport for uplift in full compliance with safety and security regulations and requirements.
-Vagar Airport is a Cat C airport while FarCargo's Boeing 757 freighter is a Cat D aircraft; this requires special approval by the aviation authority, and the application process is well underway.
-Vagar Airport is confident of meeting all preconditions and requirements in time for the launch of FarCargo's operations that will probably start out cautiously with only two weekly US-bound flights and later expanding as experience builds up and market demands grow, says Mr Jakobsen.
Bakkafrost has itself invested in the acquisition of the converted Boeing 757-200 aircraft that will be placed on the AOC of West Atlantic in the initial phase, with vision of acquiring an own FarCargo AOC at a later stage.
Initially, plans were to launch flight operations already in later October or by early November 2022, but expectations are now rather a start of operations around the turn of the year, according to industry sources.
