Oct 17, 2022 (newstodate): In its latest update, the US Federal Aviation Administration has returned Category 1 status to Malaysia.
Malaysia was downgraded to Category 2 status in 2019 for failing to reach compliance with international as well as US airport safety standards.
Under the FAA regulations, air carriers from countries with Category 2 ratings are not allowed to initiate new services to the United States, are restricted to current levels of existing service to the United States, and are not permitted to carry the code of US carriers on any flights.
Today, 83 countries have passed through the assessment program to be designated Category 1 countries; only six countries failed, namely Bangladesh, Mexico, Pakistan, Russia, Thailand and Venezuela.
